Steve Wolff: The ‘tort tax’ is a burden consumers are left to bear

April 15, the day synonymous with taxes, has come and gone, but the conversation about taxes, fueled by election politics and affordability concerns, keeps the topic top of mind for legislators and constituents.

Indianapolis Business Journal

Indiana has long benefited from a civil justice system grounded in balance, predictability and a recognition that economic growth and legal fairness go hand in hand.

That foundation has served the state well. But evolving litigation trends — and the (objective) data now available to policymakers — make clear that continued modernization will be necessary to sustain Indiana’s competitive edge.

The economic stakes are significant. According to research cited by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Institute for Legal Reform, tort costs imposed a $7.9 billion burden on Indiana’s economy in 2022, nearly $3,000 per household.

Gary Langston, Vanessa Green Sinders and Andrew Berger: Businesses need lawmakers to act on tort reform now

It is rare for the entire Hoosier business community to speak with one voice. From family-owned shops to the trucking fleets that keep our shelves stocked and the manufacturers that drive innovation, a consensus has emerged: Indiana’s legal system has become a burden that every Hoosier is forced to carry.

This is why we formed the Indiana Alliance for Legal Reform. This coalition represents an unprecedented consensus that includes the Indiana Chamber of Commerce, the Indiana Manufacturers Association, the Indiana Motor Truck Association, the National Federation of Independent Business, the Indiana Bankers Association and a growing list of other business associations and companies.

Indiana’s trucking industry has joined manufacturers and the Chamber of Commerce to form a new tort-reform group aimed at passing more laws like last year’s regulations on the litigation finance industry.

The Indiana Alliance for Legal Reform is headed by Stephen M. Wolff and has hired David C. Directors include the heads of the Indiana Motor Truck Association, the Indiana Chamber and the Indiana Manufacturers Association.
