Taxes play an integral, often controversial, role in our society. Without them, the government could not function. And while we might debate the federal government’s proper size, we generally agree the services it provides — national defense, infrastructure, public safety — are essential.

That foundation has served the state well. But evolving litigation trends — and the (objective) data now available to policymakers — make clear that continued modernization will be necessary to sustain Indiana’s competitive edge.

The economic stakes are significant. According to research cited by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Institute for Legal Reform, tort costs imposed a $7.9 billion burden on Indiana’s economy in 2022, nearly $3,000 per household.

New business-backed alliance supports Indiana bill to reshape civil lawsuits, limit jury awards

Indiana industry groups push tort reform with new nonprofit

Indiana’s trucking industry has joined manufacturers and the Chamber of Commerce to form a new tort-reform group aimed at passing more laws like last year’s regulations on the litigation finance industry.

The Indiana Alliance for Legal Reform is headed by Stephen M. Wolff and has hired David C. Long, former President Pro Tempore of the Indiana Senate, to run government and media relations. Directors include the heads of the Indiana Motor Truck Association, the Indiana Chamber and the Indiana Manufacturers Association.

Indiana business groups create nonprofit to push for civil, tort law reforms

A coalition of Indiana business groups are joining forces with lobbying firm the Corydon Group to create a nonprofit focused on business-friendly civil and tort law reforms.

The new group is called the Indiana Alliance for Legal Reform. Its board members included representatives from the Indiana Motor Truck Association, the Indiana Chamber of Commerce and the Indiana Manufacturers Association.
